Myofascial Release targets the fascial system. Fascia is a connective tissue network that runs continuously throughout the body. In a healthy system, this tissue is fluid and dynamic. In a system that has been locked down for a while (- due to injury, physical or emotional trauma, or repetitive patterns -), the tissue can harden and crystallize pulling on the entire network with a pressure potential of up to 2000lbs per square inch.
My approach to the body in this work (-and generally-) is respectful. I operate with gentle, sustained pressure that meets the body right where it is. I spend time in each hold - upwards of 5-7 minutes so the body feels safe enough to make deeper and lasting changes beyond chronically held patterns. The science says that at 90 seconds of hold, the elasto-collagenous barriers of the fascia are engaged. At the 5-7 min hold, the body begins to release 3 different kinds of interleukins (your body's natural anti-inflammatory).
I, personally, get excited about the deeper layers of release possible through this work. Some researchers talk about the fascial network as our consciousness. The body's innate and intuitive wisdom begins to take over when given enough time. This looks different depending on the individual and their unique blueprint. Some clients may see colours or shapes while receiving the work, while others FEEL the deeper physical sensations. Every client comes off the table deeply relaxed and with clear eyes.
Most of my clients are coming to see me for a specific reason - MFR is an amazing way to address chronic physical pain with the help of the body itself.
My ideal client understands that pain is just the body signalling that something is out of alignment and can shift with nurturing touch and compassionate presence.
