Before your appointment:
What to expect for your first session:
The first session will be 1.5 hours. This will include an initial evaluation, treatment plan development based on our findings and your personal goals or recommendations of your health care provider, and treatment using trigger point release techniques and FSM. You will be actively engaged in this treatment process. This is usually a movement-focused treatment (depending on the condition being treated, level of pain, type of injury, etc.) with a lot of communication between the client and therapist. Please wear or bring a change of clothing that allows you to move easily (tank, sports bra, shorts without thick waistband or bulky pockets). Microcurrent and DDS bioelectric technology may be applied during some or all of your treatment session.
Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy is customized for each client to identify and treat the source of pain & dysfunction caused by trigger points found in muscles and fascia (the 3-D tissue that surrounds all body structures). It's a system of evaluation, treatment, and movement retraining techniques to relieve pain and return the client to full mobility and function.
What are trigger points?
Trigger points (TrP) are taut fiber bundles within muscles that are stuck in a contracted state. Trigger points can cause pain directly at the site of the TrP, but most of the time cause referred pain (pain felt at other locations in the body). The referred pain patterns they create are predictable, which means a trigger point in a certain area of a muscle will always produce the same pattern of pain referral.
Active trigger points cause pain or other sensations, such as tingling, numbness, tightness, or cramps. Trigger points can also cause reduced range of motion, strength, & endurance, as well as weakness, restricted movement, or inability to do a particular movement. This pain and dysfunction can impair normal daily activities and sports performance.
Latent trigger points are only painful when pressed and you may not know you have them until triggered by a particular activity. A sudden contraction, as when you correct when slipping on ice, or doing something you're not accustomed to, such as painting your house or lifting a heavy couch to help someone move can irritate a latent trigger point. You might think you "threw your back out" but really it could be a latent trigger point causing the pain. Finding and treating them before they become a problem can help prevent future injuries.
What causes trigger points?
Any kind of overuse or direct trauma to a muscle can lead to the development of trigger points. Other factors can cause trigger points to form, some of which are repetitive motions, posture, injury, using a muscle you don't normally use, stress/anxiety, and not getting restorative sleep.
Blood flow is reduced in areas that contain trigger points, therefore normal cell metabolism is disrupted. Blood brings oxygen and nutrients to the cell and carries away carbon dioxide and other toxins. When this exchange is reduced by a trigger point, that area of the muscle is not getting enough oxygen or nutrients to function normally, toxins build up, and the production of ATP (the main source of energy for most cell processes) is decreased. This leads to pain and/or dysfunction (weakness, numbness, tingling, limited range of motion, etc.).
The muscle will not function normally until the blood flow and ATP are restored.
Trigger point therapy, Microcurrent, and DDS Bioelectric Therapy are known to increase circulation. Trigger point pressure release and movement techniques improve blood flow and normal resting length and function to muscle fibers. DDS activates muscle and nerve cells, helping to restore normal cell metabolism. Studies show that Microcurrent increases ATP by 500%, which helps tissues heal at an accelerated rate.

Microcurrent therapy (FSM) has the ability to relieve pain, decrease inflammation, increase the rate of wound healing, relieve trigger points, change scar tissue, increase lymphatic flow, and re-establish the normal communication between the brain and the affected body tissue.
FSM uses an extremely low level of electrical current to treat the underlying cause of pain by helping tissues naturally repair at a cellular level. The effects of specific frequencies on tissues (muscle, nerve, tendon, etc) and their conditions (pain, inflammation, scar, trauma, etc) can stimulate natural healing of the body, reduce pain, and improve function.
Specific frequencies have been identified for almost all tissue types. The amount of current used in FSM is approximately the same level as the cells in our body normally produce (micro ampere), You will not feel the current, but you may feel less pain, muscles or other tissues softening, warmth, a release of endorphins ("feel good" chemicals), and relaxation. The sensation is described as being "light or floaty" and is a response to any frequency that resonates with the body tissue and condition being treated.
Microcurrent increases the release of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) by 500%. ATP can be thought of as the fuel behind cellular metabolism. It increases blood flow to reduce pain and heal damaged tissue, helps remove waste material (detoxifies), and aids in the communication between cells and the nervous system. This significantly speeds up healing.
Microcurrent has a history of being very safe, but should be used cautiously or not at all with those who have pacemakers, pregnancy, or cancer in the area to be treated.

DDS (direct detoxification system) can help activate muscle and nerve cells, decrease muscle and joint pain, increase circulation, decrease inflammation, remove toxins, and increase endorphins. It helps promote your body's self-healing mechanism by activating nerve and muscle cells and opening meridian pathways. The DDS machine generates a low electrical current which is transferred to the client's body through the therapist's hands. Clients describe the sensation as tingling but with a general overall sensation of relaxation.
DDS is safe for any age but is not recommended for those with pacemaker/electronic implants, pregnancy, or cancer.
Disclaimer: Trigger point therapy, FSM, and DDS are not intended to be curative, diagnostic, or replace medical treatment.

The Science:
Our cells produce an electrical charge that can be scientifically measured. There is a natural flow of energy (electrical current) produced by the cells in our body. Cells use bioelectric current to send impulses along nerve fibers, regulate tissue and organ functions, manage metabolism and other body processes.
There is bioelectric current in every type of body tissue.
Tissues are made up of cells. Cells are made up of atoms. Atoms have electrons that vibrate & spin in orbits around the nucleus producing electromagnetic energy. Current travels through our bodies via water found in/around our cells.
Each body tissue cell has a charge and an ideal frequency that the cell's electrons resonate with.
All things in our universe are constantly in motion, vibrating. All things resonate at certain frequencies. A frequency is the number of vibrations or waves per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). Resonance occurs when the frequencies of two objects match and energy is transferred (when one of the objects is vibrating it forces the second object into motion if they have the same frequency). Properly tuned string instruments are a good example: if you play a certain string on one instrument, the same string on an instrument across the room will start to vibrate. So, if you pluck the A string of a guitar, which has a frequency of 110Hz, the A string of a tuned guitar across the room will start to vibrate, resonating with the first guitar. If you put your finger on the string, causing interference, the vibration and resonance will stop.
Healthy tissues conduct a bioelectric current throughout the body. This flow of current is disrupted (interference) when your body experiences any kind of trauma, such as injury, illness, inflammation, and stress. The normal charge and frequency of the tissue cells becomes altered causing dysfunction. When bioelectric therapy is applied to damaged tissue it can help restore normal charge and frequencies within the cells, re-establishing normal cell function. This allows your body to heal itself naturally.
