Cultural Competence: Prejudice, Racism & Discrimination for Massage & Bodywork
I recently began working with an elderly gentleman, in his home. Before I began seeing him, he was on a lot of pain medication, and still complained regularly of pain, often crying out. He had seen a few massage therapists, at least one of whom actually continued her treatment without modification even though he was crying out in more pain. He was taking so much pain medication that it was affecting his lucidity, and he was doing less, remembering less, and understanding less each day. I worked with him using a combination of CranioSacral Therapy and massage. He immediately noticed a reduction in pain that lasted longer each session. Very soon, they were able to reduce his pain medication levels. His lucidity returned, and he began conversing, and even playing games of bridge again. After a time, I noticed signs of sleep apnea in a session - and they reduced his pain medication yet again. Continued therapy is allowing him to sleep well, be comfortable most of the time, and enjoy the times when he is with his children again. I love my job.
