After spending her twenties in New York and Los Angeles (and a few other places around the world), Carrie joined the rest of her family in St. Louis in 2012. Shortly after moving to New York to pursue an MFA at New York University, she began a regular yoga practice at a studio she found in Brooklyn and immediately fell in love with the grounding and calm the practice provided in the midst of a major life transition. She completed yoga teaching training in 2007 and has been teaching ever since. Carrie loves the connection that teaching yoga allows her to form with others from all different walks of life, and how she’s been able to watch students experience physical and mental shifts towards a more comfortable, harmonious way of functioning and being in the world. She wanted to deepen her ability to help people find this kind of ease and transformation, which led her to the massage therapy training program at The Healing Arts Center in 2015. While in school Carrie studied numerous modalities including Swedish, Acupressure, Deep Tissue and Myofascial Release. She also completed training for the Healing Arts Center’s Cancer Clinic, which provides free massage to patients currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Carrie graduated in 2015 and was inducted into The Order of the Twin Hearts, an honor society that acknowledges outstanding performance.
Carrie received an Ashiatsu massage from Sara shortly before graduating from HAC and knew that this was a modality that was meant for her. She knew from the beginning of her journey into massage therapy, her feet would be a crucial portion of her therapeutic approach. Her first experience with Ashiatsu solidified that notion. She left the session with Sara completely relaxed, feeling taller and more at ease in her body. Carrie loves that Ashiatsu allows the therapist to provide a deeply therapeutic, consistent massage for clients without pain. Ashiatsu also speaks to Carrie’s love of yoga and fluid movement. She adores being able to float around on overhead bars all day, and how Ashiatsu allows her to be kind to her body while giving the best massage possible. Carrie completed training in Ashiatsu Deepfeet Bar Therapy with founder Ruthie Hardee. She’s currently studying Thai Massage with Jill Duncan through the Thai Bodywork school based in Evanston, Illinois. Thai Massage and Ashiatsu are wonderful complements to each other, both therapeutic, meditative forms of bodywork that are beneficial to both giver and receiver. Carrie’s goal in her continued studies is to deepen her understanding of the intricate ways the body functions, how dysfunction can lead to chronic pain, and how best to relieve that pain and bring the body back to balance.
Carrie is thrilled to be joining the team at Sole Shine, as she feels this space aligns with her goals to create a compassionate, supportive environment in which clients feel safe to completely relax and let go, and can also take home tools and practices that assist them in feeling their best every day. When she’s not at Sole Shine, you can find her teaching vinyasa, hatha and restorative yoga classes at Urban Breath Yoga, and dreaming about the ocean.
