Greetings!
I had been a massage client for years when I started teaching at
Miller-Motte. While there, I often helped the massage classes by being a
body on the table, or assisting with an exam, or being a secret shopper in the clinic.
I decided I wanted to study massage therapy and start working part time.
I thought it would be a great way for me to earn some extra money.
However, while undergoing the training I started to see and feel something
different. Massage is the only profession that I have had where I leave
after a day of work feeling uplifted, feeling better about myself, and feeling
that I did something meaningful, that I did something that truly helped another
person. For me
Swedish is a massage where I can assist the client in letting go
of the stress of daily life; it is a time when the client can let go and do
nothing, let go and rest the mind from tasks, lesson plans, shopping. Through this, I believe that we can handle
daily stress better and address issues more clear headed.
Deep Tissue is work: work for both the client and me. While in a Swedish Massage I don’t spend time
in conversation, in Deep Tissue, I speak
more. I like to explain what I am doing
so the client understand; but more than that, I need to get feedback on the
work—does this hurt, does this refer pain, etc.
In Deep Tissue massage, the client and I work together to promote
healing and release pain. Deep Tissue is the massage for anyone who has knots
or overly tense muscles. Deep Tissue and
Medical Massage are similar in that we can focus our work on the target area
and only the target area. In this case,
a massage of about 30 minutes is all that will be required. However, some clients enjoy relaxing with a
Swedish style massage for 30 minutes after deep tissue work.
I
enjoy doing Swedish, Deep Tissue and Medical massages equally—they all bring me joy.
