Certain techniques used, body pressure points, and muscle tissue density don't always need DEEP pressure. During the massage medium to heavy pressure can be achieved and adjusted to the clients preference and their personal threshold.
Sports massage, for me, relates to a Focus Session (sometime not whole body). For the area that aches I will manipulate that extremity or area with counter-balanced movement. Creating articulation around a joint, tendon, or ligament is necessary to pinpoint the real issue which may be referred by another muscle or area.
Swedish falls on the lighter side of touch but doesn't mean firm pressure isn't achieved. Swedish incorporates more of a pattern-like flow that connects the body as a whole rather than jumping around from area to area.
Thai-Swe is the CEU course I'm certified within. It's a basic intro of Thai coined "table-thai" rather than being on the floor. Some actions involved crawling on the client using the weight of the practitioner. While other actions involve moderate stretching of the client while I'm working on the outside of the table. This is a great way to gain flexibility and incorporate range-of-motion into your massage.
With any massage there is an innate therapeutic healing touch of areas in distress or in need of healing that make themselves known. Working on muscle groups that connect to certain conditions is a specialty of therapeutic touch. Carpal tunnel, thoracic outlet syndrome, or rotator cuff issues are just a few examples of dis-ease that I specialize in.
Understanding trigger points and how they should be released in contrast to surrounding muscles is all about focus work. Taking time in allowing the muscle fibers to release on a neurological platform can be a "good-pain" and take up to 60 seconds on one spot-area.
