Dr. Jeff McConnell is a Board Certified, acupuncture physician (AP2231) and a licensed massage therapist (MA9200). The great majority of the patients that come for treatment are looking for relief of pain or to resolve some dysfunction in their body. While Dr. Jeff has many methods or techniques to help relieve pain and to improve the functioning of the body after there is an injury or the body has gotten out of balance, he believes in the value of preventative medicine. Staying well and being proactive about our health is a useful long-term strategy.
In addition to acupuncture treatments, Dr. Jeff also employs a variety of manual or hands on massage methods. These include: deep tissue massage, NMT (neuromuscular massage therapy), relaxation massage, Shiatsu, Reiki, and assisted stretching techniques. Many people are familiar with various methods of massage but may never of heard of Shiatsu or Reiki. Shiatsu can be thought of as finger acupuncture. It employs the same theories, pathways of energy, and points as are used in acupuncture, however it uses acupressure techniques to relax tense muscles instead of needles. Both acupuncture and Shiatsu strive to promote a full flow of energy through the meridians or energy pathways. These pathways connect to everything in the body sort of like an auxiliary nervous system. Reiki (ray-key) is a form of energy healing that is both gentle and powerful. The Reiki practitioner focuses on improving the flow of energy that is flowing through the seven main energy centers that are located in the same location as our endocrine glands. When these centers get blocked or out of balance, then we can experience problems on the physical, mental, emotional, energetic, or spiritual levels. While some people are sensitive enough to feel the energy moving around in their body, most people notice how relaxed and calm they feel. The assisted stretching can be used as a solo technique or in combination with massage to relieve pain and to help improve posture so that less stress is placed upon our skeletal muscles. Another way that it is used is to help improve the range of motion of our joints so that it is easier to move smoothly and with less resistance. This can greatly enhance an athletes athletic performance.
In addition to his health care practice, Dr. Jeff also teaches seminars to nurses and licensed massage therapists. He has been approved as a continuing education provider by the Florida Boards of Nursing and Massage Therapy (CE Broker number: 50-10126) and by the NCBTMB (312997).
