18 years' ago massage therapy helped me overcome a devastating and life threatening injury/illness. It helped me start to feel comfortable in my own body, learn to trust the processes my whole being (mind, body, heart, soul, and spirit) was going through during recovery and it helped me learn to walk again. Now, I have become the massage therapist and I get the joy of helping others find moments of grace, relaxation, health, healing, relief and comfort during their most uncomfortable and vulnerable times.
I am highly qualified through extensive education and on the job experience. My professional background is mostly medical and sports related industries, however I have worked in many a university, stadium, ball field, day spa, hotel, neighborhood massage clinic, resort, hospital, assisted living facility, hospice, church, boardroom, conference room, grocery store, shopping mall, home and anywhere in between, where an individual has been in need of touch. I've been privileged to touch countless tired necks and shoulders, over-worked hands, and exhausted feet. Every body is different and each one brings their own set of insecurities, injuries, illnesses and insights. My passion for this work and my love of working with those in need (no matter what the need) drives me forward through the next leg of my journey as a therapist.
Over the years, I've taken countless hours of continuing education and have come to settle on three specialties; craniosacral therapy, myofascial release and reflexology. However, I am certified as a pre-natal therapist, and teach many continuing education courses (to fellow LMT's) in the areas of healthcare massage, deep tissue therapy, massage for eating disorders and addictions, as well as self care. Though many clients present with a particular "condition" or "issue" of concern, all of my sessions are based on the body as a whole, and while each "condition" or "issue" is addressed, I am more concerned with integrative work that allows for relief and relaxation of mind, body and spirit.
The main reason massage therapy is so effective is that it gives the mind and body the ability to move out of it's constant state of stress (this is called cumulative stress); to move beyond the forced, continued "fight or flight" and settle into what is called the "relaxation response." Everybody is equipped with this relaxation response, but many of us do not know how to access it on our own. Massage reminds us what it feels like to be in that state. AND, a good massage therapist will be able to help the client find ways to turn off the "monkey mind" of today's stressful activities and learn to access this embedded "relaxation response." Remember that when the body is relaxed, many of the "conditions" and "issues" we present with are much more manageable.
