Massage has offered Melissa an extension of her teaching career: the ability to work with others for their mutual betterment, and opportunities to continue learning. She enjoys incorporating a variety of modalities and techniques including Swedish, Deep Tissue and Myofascial Release into her sessions to work toward optimal outcomes for her clients.
Originally from upstate New York, Melissa has enjoyed the warmer climate here in coastal North Carolina. It allows her to spend more time engaging in some of her favorite activities: spending time with her dog and working in the garden.

After winning a scholarship towards my massage therapy program, I was contacted by the sponsor, Massage.com, to write a blog of my experiences as a student. I was encouraged to write about typical student experiences, like how to prepare for massage school, creating balance between school, work and life, and how to budget time and finances for successful completion of your program. The teacher in me couldn't resist an entry about how people learn, in an effort to encourage my fellow students to explore different strategies to learn the huge volume of information. However, I also was able to write about some of my own personal experiences, like our trips to a cadaver lab at a local hospital, my experiences volunteering at the hospice wing of another hospital, and learning about a variety of modalities of massage that was, at times, a little mind-boggling. After having spent my entire adult life writing (papers for college, thesis for my Masters, assignments and examples for my English students), it was a thrill to get paid to do something I love.
I took a position as a massage therapist in the spa at the Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid, NY while I was awaiting the results of my licensing exam. The environs were stunning, and the spa was the premier location in the area for quality massage, bodywork, and esthetic treatments. It was a great experience to be part of an establishment of great renown.
