I graduated from Virginia College with a certificate in Massage Therapy. One of my favorite definitions for massage is "massage is a manipulation of the bodies' soft tissues to reeducate them to a higher level of homeostasis." In other words, massage is working the soft tissues to help reteach it a better normal. I love seeing a person able to walk more evenly or be able to function in less pain.
