As a professional athlete and massage therapist, I have spent the last 13 years of my life training for competition and providing manual therapy to my clients. Although very opposite careers, boxing and bodywork have remained synonymous in my life through one key element, movement.
Whether in the gym training different punch combinations and foot work drills, I was improving my skill set through repetitive movement. In my therapy clinic, I would address a client's pain & restriction through manual therapy in order for them to move better.
The element of movement has been the underlay of my professions.
Following this constant has led me to seek higher knowledge. I researched all the information I could find on proper posture, corrective exercise and proper human biomechanics. I soon gained a certification as a NASM’s Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES).
As a professional athlete, bodyworker, and movement specialist, I look at myself as a hybrid practitioner. I have come to realize that massage therapist, chiropractors, and physical therapist really only treat their clients past. In order to future-proof our clients we must teach them how to move better.
We must educate our clients to be independent and only come to us for maintenance. This is the missing piece in many therapy models.
