Why did I choose Massage Therapy?

Truth is, I would have never imagined that I would be doing massage for a living. I always thought I was going to be a physical therapist. As a young child, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. Luckily, it was caught early and I didn’t need surgery. That’s where I was introduced to physical therapy. It changed my life. I was given corrective exercises that prevented having to wear a brace and/or undergo surgery. How awesome! My experience was an inspiration for my future career.

So what changed my mind? Where did I get the idea of massage therapy? It all came down to an internship.

As part of my undergraduate experience, I did an internship at an outpatient physical therapy clinic. I was able to observe and experience what it was like to be a physical therapist. Everything from creating treatment plans for strengthening muscles to manually manipulating muscles to juggling multiple patients at once. The further into the internship I got, the more I realized that physical therapy was not for me. I knew that I wanted to help people physically get better, but this wasn’t how.

However, the hands-on manipulation and massaging of the muscles peaked my interest. Seeing the difference massage can make in someone’s movement and recovery fascinated me. I knew at that moment I found my passion. What better way to help someone feel better than through the gift of touch.

So why now the focus on athletes?

I have never been an athletic person. In spite of this, I am a huge sports fan. I love watching different sports. It’s an exciting atmosphere. Growing up, all my siblings played soccer. I spent a lot of time on the field watching practices and cheering them on during their games. I personally saw what an athlete’s body goes through when training on and off seasons, and the impact even the smallest injury can have. I knew there has to be a way that I, as a massage therapist, can help with injury prevention and recovery. I want to provide a service that my siblings did not have available to them during their athletic years, and to help an aspiring professional athlete or a veteran athlete with muscle movement and recovery.
