Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of the body's lymphatic fluid.
MLD Technique was developed in 1930's Paris, by husband and wife: Emil, and Estrid Vodder, for the relief of swollen lymph glands and nodes.
MLD a key competent of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) which is utilized in the treatment of Lymphedema, and post-traumatic/post-surgical edema.
Though utilizing some elements of myofascial massage technique, MDL should not be confused with traditional massage—as the focus of the therapy is on superficial and deep lymphatic vessels, ducts, and trunks. The technique follows a patterned protocol guided by the understanding that lymphatic pathways surrounding an affected area must be cleared BEFORE an affected area may drained.
ALL lymphatic vessels flow one-directionally through a WATERSHED of tissue matrix towards the heart. The intention of MDL is to stimulate the rhythmic contraction of the vessels and improve their activity so as to reroute stagnant or encapsulated fluid.
On a normal day our bodies filter approximately 3-5 liters of protein rich lymphatic fluid through the tissues. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Technique can help the body to filter up to 20 liters of lymphatic fluid—clearing stagnancy in the tissues, flushing cells with fresh fluid, and encouraging the removal of waste, and by-product from the body.
Benefits of MDL include:
