During my sessions, I take the time to listen to what's happening in your body and create a treatment plan accordingly. I blend intuition and deep listening with a methodical approach, looking at both the entire structure causing pain or discomfort as well as broader holding and compensation patterns throughout the body that could be contributing to the main problem area. A session with me can look very different depending on our goals; techniques I utilize include Myofascial Release (with both deep, direct approaches and subtle, indirect approaches), Thai (usually involving stretching), cupping, Trigger point/Neuromuscular, and Swedish. Informed by my past as a professional ballet dancer, my work is appropriate for movers of all types and anyone who wants to add more movement to their life. While the techniques and pressure I utilize vary greatly based on your needs, one goal is the throughline of all my sessions: To create a safe, healing space for anyone to come and realize their bodywork goals, whether that be to decrease pain, increase performance, balance their nervous system, or just take some time for self care.
Why Umbel?
Umbel /'ʌmb(ə)l/ :
a botanical structure in which stalks of nearly equal length spring from a common center and form a flat or curved surface. From Latin umbella "parasol, sunshade."
My reason for choosing the name Umbel is multilayered. I take a holistic approach to bodywork, always remembering that there is a full human attached to those muscles and knots with a complex history. I feel that the umbel imagery, of a single point sprouting multiple offshooots which may then sprout their own offshoots, is indicative of this idea. The root of the word, parasol, feels indicative of the idea of shelter, oasis, a place to find refuge. I hope to create this atmosphere for every person on my table, even during deep and intense work, because I believe that growth out of pain can only happen when we are in an environment of safety and security.
