I don't believe massage, bodywork and self-care are one-size-fits-all. That's why I spend time with my clients before and after sessions discussing their unique needs and goals and creating a custom client-and-goal-specific self-care plan. I also take into consideration that every body is different every day - what worked for you yesterday may not be what your body needs today. For example, perhaps we're working to resolve some long-standing trigger points and have been using deep trigger point release techniques in our sessions, but then you experience a trauma such a death in the family - in that case I might recommend we steer away from the deeper, more physically intense work that day and instead do a relaxation massage with light to moderate pressure or even Reiki if you wish. The body is not a static form - it is ever changing and evolving and so my bodywork follows suite.
When appropriate I may utilize some more interactive techniques such as deep diaphragmatic breathing, reciprocal inhibition or post-isometric relaxation, where I bring you into a stretch and you try to come out of the stretch while I provide resistance. These all aim to release tension in the muscles, allowing them to relax more gently than just stretching alone. I will often recommend these techniques as part of a self-care regime.
Self-CareSelf-care is critical when it comes to prolonging the effects of massage and making progress with your wellness goals. That being said, I am not a drill sergeant and will never chastise you or make you feel bad for not doing your recommended self-care between sessions. I try to make self-care easy to work into your hectic life, so small doses are often the way to go. If you can do 10 minutes of self-care just 2-3 times a week, you'll reap the rewards!
The self-care I recommend often entails becoming more aware of and in tune with your own body. Bringing awareness to your posture and habits you have is often a first step, and making simple changes such as the way you hold your body when you sit or drive your car can have profound effects on how you feel overall.
The Therapeutic RelationshipI take my role as Licensed Massage Therapist very seriously with my goal always being to help my clients feel better and heal. I will work with you towards that goal but also recognize that I do not have all the answers and therefore will refer out to other practitioners when I see fit. I ask that, as my client, you also recognize that I can not fix you, in an hour or a lifetime. I simply help facilitate your own body's ability to heal itself - by removing blockages such as adhesions or trigger points, by assisting your body and mind in relaxing and relieving stress, and by providing you with self-care tools you can use for the rest of your life. Let’s work together on this journey of healing!
