I come to massage from a background of outdoor endurance sports. Working for many years as a paddling, rafting and trekking guide in Alaska and Antarctica, I became keenly aware of repetitive use injuries and the need for long-term muscle maintenance and rehabilitation.

In 2005 I attended my first massage training at the Heartwood Institute of Massage, and completed a 700-hour program at the Vancouver School of Bodywork and Massage in 2007. Thereafter, I went on to create the Wellness Program for One Ocean Expeditions, offering massage and yoga on board their ocean going fleet in the Arctic and Antarctic. I returned to Alaska in 2010 and as my family grew, so did my interest in injury treatment, prevention, and massage techniques to maintain muscle health and performance.

I went on to complete training in Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, Lymphatic Drainage and Orthopedic Deep Tissue techniques. I firmly believe caring for our muscles, connective tissue, and joints is an integral part of our overall wellness. In our sessions my goal is to alter muscle restriction, alleviate pain, support soft tissue healing, and promote deep relaxation.

My name is Sydney and I have been a Washington state resident for most of my life, recently moving up north to Bellingham May of last year. I graduated my massage program from Cortiva Institute in Seattle in 2011, and have since been focusing my massage practice in therapeutic and clinical settings for over seven years now. My exposure to client diversity over the years has given me quality experience to hone in on a variety of massage techniques and approaches such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release, therapeutic cupping, and the ability to address dysfunction and discomfort in full body regions. A graduate of the Cortiva Institute of Seattle with prior training at The Brian Utting School of Massage, I have been practicing therapeutic massage since 2010. Having worked primarily in clinical settings, the focus of my technique has largely been injury treatment and pain management, though I am a strong believer in the systemic benefits of mindfulness and relaxation. With an emphasis on neuromuscular therapy for the treatment of trigger points, commonly referred to as “knots”, and deep tissue techniques, my style is slow, specific, and tailored to each patient’s goals. Cody was drawn to massage while teaching Tai Chi at the YMCA; as a lifelong martial artist, he’s always enjoyed studying movement. This was my first massage so I didn't know what to expect. Kendra was so welcoming, and told me different massage options for the time we would have. I did not like the massage table. It was too high for me, not adjustable, I had to use the step stool in the room to climb onto the table. Also, MW is on the second floor and the building has no elevator, so it’s not handicap accessible. Not a problem for me but could be for others, especially those with leg or hip injuries.

The painting: They’re cohesive and communicate a sense of hope, offering a subconscious communication for the often “heavy” client even before he or she is on the massage table. That said, I know it’s stereotypical for a massage room to be small and dimly lit, decorated with tapestries with the sound of computer synthesized waves or rain, or particular “massage-music”, and the smell of essential oils subtly infusing the room ... I thought I had a take it or leave it attitude toward the stereotype, however, after my time at Massage Works, I realize I’d rather not “leave it”. I think aroma-therapy, a warm blanket, a smaller dimly lite room would have added to the necessary relaxation needed for optimal body work. The space itself was not comfortable, and client focused... I think it’s good when a massage therapist feels at home in their space and can decorate or add to an environment that helps to serve their overall therapeutic goals and objectives as well as the client’s individualized wholistic care objectives, however I didn’t think this was achieved....

Website was informative about staff & other pertinent info and pretty easy to use to book appointments once I was able to create an account, which took a few tries. I wish the massage tables were adjustable as it's a bit challenging for a shorter person to climb up onto them, especially if you have an injury that makes some movements difficult. The front desk person is there limited hours, so not reachable during all the hours the clinic is open.

Sydney was amazing. I had surgery a month ago for breast cancer that caused tension, inflammation in my neck, shoulder, scapula and arm (due to me compensating for pain on that side). Cheryl didn't know I was a new client, nor had she seen the carefully completed intake form I had filled out online. So I had to take time from the 60 minutes I was in the room, to tell her all of that, which while not dire, was disappointing. I liked her massage, but oddly she left out my hands entirely, and given the choice they would have been something I'd have chosen to have more time on, not less. I've never had a massage where the hands were not included, so didn't think I needed to request attention to them. I arrived exactly on time (there was no notice given when I made the appt. that I should do anything else), we spent about 5 minutes going over my wishes etc (all on the form), and I was left for 5 minutes to undress (far longer than needed), so I had a lovely 50 minute massage.

The paperwork took so long..I was on the table at in room about 6:15. Out by 7:03. Felt like a short massage. Wish I'd filled out the paperwork in advance. The billing was awkward as I had checked with massage works and my insurance provider and knew what to pay. .but LMT thought it was higher amount. That's what she had been told.

Overall, I enjoyed my massage experience. Mostly I gave only 3/4 stars because of Insurance. Before booking with BMW, I called twice to confirm that my insurance would be accepted for a prenatal massage. Several places throughout Bellingham had said no for my insurance, so I was pleased when you said you could take it. That was my sole reason for booking with Bellingham Massage works. However, when I went to leave after my massage, the admin said that all the sudden my insurance didn't cover massage. I just think that its misleading to assure someone twice that insurance will be an option, then once the service is completed....have something else to say. The admin said we could bill insurance regardless and see how it plays out, but I was disappointed a bit on how it was handled.

I love your massage therapists, but the receptionist is not my favorite. She's cold and unwelcoming. I frequently walk in to an empty waiting area for 5-10 minutes, unsure of what's going on. And if she does happen to appear while I'm waiting, I'm never greeted or let known if my therapist is running behind. When I'm done with my treatment, she's quick to run my card and send me on my way without any kind of "have a good day" or "thank you".
